The Phoenix Rising is a powerful ancient symbol of the sun that has great meaning for spiritual renewal, change, transformation, second chances, reemergence, rebirth and regeneration. The Phoenix is unique in that it is immortal and overcomes death in order to live again. Although birds with similar immortal powers are represented across multiple cultures, from Egypt to Japan, perhaps the most well-known legend is of the Arabian Phoenix, a mythical bird with vibrant red and gold feathers. The story goes as follows:
“Making its home near a cool well, the phoenix would appear at dawn every morning to sing a song so enchanting that even the god Apollo would stop to listen…As the end of its life approached, the Phoenix would build a pyre nest of aromatic branches and spices such as myrrh, sets it on fire, and is consumed in the flames. After three days the birth – or as some legends say a rebirth – the Phoenix arises from the ashes. (According to some sources, the Phoenix arose from the midst of the flames.)
A symbolic representation of the death and rebirth of the sun, the Phoenix is also described as being either eagle or heron like. It lives on dew, killing nothing and crushing nothing that it touches. Generally considered the king of birds, it has alternately been called the bird of the sun., [Source: Rise of the Phoenix]
The Phoenix has long been an inspirational symbol to me personally, as I’ve had to undergo both the pain and liberation of my own metaphorical rebirths as a result of changes in my relationships, lifestyle, identity, and purpose at various points along the journey.
So what does the Phoenix mean to you and how can you use it as a tool for healing?
Perhaps you’re metaphorically in the Phoenix’s nest right now, but it isn’t a comfortable nest, it’s where the bird goes in preparation for a huge change. Are you struggling in the flames of change? If so, one thing you can learn from the Phoenix is that you might in fact be on the precipice of an incredible life-changing transformation. That being said it’s hard to know that right now, because you’re in the painful phase of letting go of what no longer serves you, whether that be a marriage, a relationship, a home, a career, unhealthy habits, a life path or even an identity. The emotional pain feels terrible, of course it does, but if we look to the Phoenix, we can see that the flames and the heat are actually what we need in order to transform and rise up out of the ashes! The Phoenix, being the bird of the sun, also reminds us that with every sunset comes a new dawn and this cycle of death and rebirth in all of its various forms is a natural part of our growth and ultimately, our healing. This is why I chose the Phoenix rising as my logo – it’s a powerful symbol for the strength and transformation it takes for each of us to reach our greatest potential, my focal point as a life coach.
If you’ve already burned and struggled in the “Phoenix’s nest” and feel that you’re ready to rise again into your whole, beautiful, best self, I am here to guide you and support you.
